The Netherlands join the LUMI consortium

We are very pleased to announce that the LUMI Strategic Committee has approved the Netherlands as the eleventh member country of the LUMI consortium.

LUMI, Europe’s flagship supercomputer, is located at CSC’s data center in Kajaani, Finland. The supercomputer is owned by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and hosted by the LUMI consortium, now including eleven European countries: Finland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland. Bringing together their unique expertise and experience, these countries are together providing added value for the whole European research ecosystem.

– The LUMI consortium is delighted to welcome the Netherlands as a new member of the consortium. The Netherlands is an innovative knowledge economy and digital frontrunner as well as a long-term, trusted partner to the LUMI consortium countries in the fields of High-Performance Computing and data management. This brings valuable insights and competencies into the consortium, allowing us to step up our effort to create state-of-the-art HPC and AI for addressing complex research questions and boosting industrial excellence, says Kimmo Koski, Managing Director of CSC – IT Center for Science on behalf of the LUMI consortium.

This also gives us the opportunity to offer Dutch researchers direct access to Europe’s fastest supercomputer, which is also one of the world’s leading platforms for artificial intelligence, says Hans Louwhoff, COO and member of the Board of Directors of SURF.

LUMI is fully operational providing unprecedented computing and AI resources for the benefit of European researchers in academia and industry, as well as SMEs. Researchers and companies in the Netherlands will have their own national share of LUMI’s computing resources. Additionally, users located in an EU Member State or in a country associated with Horizon 2020 may apply for EuroHPC Joint Undertaking’s share of LUMI’s resources in dedicated calls.
