SC24 recapped

The LUMI booth at SC24

The SC24 conference in Atlanta, Georgia, welcomed a record-breaking 18,000 attendees, making it a grand annual gathering for the HPC community. LUMI, one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, was proudly represented at the event, showcasing its cutting-edge capabilities.

The biannual top lists were published at the conference. LUMI, EuroHPC Joint Undertaking’s flagship supercomputer, positioned 8th on the new Top500 list. The list was topped by the El Capitan supercomputer located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the USA. Europe’s fastest supercomputer on the list, the HPC6 system, installed at Eni S.p.A.’s energy company data center in Ferrera Erbognone, Italy, was ranked 5th.

In addition to the Top500 list, several other new benchmark lists were published at SC24.

LUMI was listed in the HPL-MxP benchmark as number 3 with its 2.350 exaflops performance. The HPL-MxP benchmark probes the system capability for converged high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, which was one of the design goals of LUMI. This makes LUMI one of the leading AI platforms for science in the world, which has also been proven with the many scientific projects utilizing LUMI’s revolutionary AI capacity. Over half of LUMI’s capacity has been used for AI-related research and innovation.

Prestigious awards

Advancements powered by the LUMI supercomputer were recognized in the 21st edition of the HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards, announced at the SC24 conference.

These achievements, using LUMI’s resources, earned the following honors:
The Destination Earth initiative:
• Readers’ Choice: Best Use of HPC in Physical Sciences

The Destination Earth Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin:
• Readers’ Choice: Top HPC-Enabled Scientific Achievement

DigiFarm, a Norwegian company:
• Editors’ Choice: Best HPC Collaboration (Academia/Government/Industry)

DigiFarm was also awarded at the 2024 HPC Innovation Excellence Awards. DigiFarm is transforming agricultural processes using HPC and AI: the company leverages the immense computing power of the LUMI supercomputer to process high-resolution satellite data, which is used to train machine learning models to accurately detect field boundaries and sown areas based on vegetation and biomass. The prestigious 2024 HPC Innovation Excellence Awards were announced at the SC24 conference, given by the renowned HPC analyst group Hyperion Research and their HPC User Forum.

Engaging booth activities

LUMI had a successful exhibition booth at the SC24 conference. At the booth visitors learned more about scientific achievements made with the system, and how to apply for access to it. Countless fruitful LUMI-related discussions took place at the booth during the entire week. Thanks to everyone who visited the booth!
