LUMI is supporting new Czech research at the intersection of HPC, AI and quantum computing

The latest Open Access Grant Competition at IT4Innovations has once again highlighted the strong demand for high-performance computing resources among researchers from Czech institutions. The 37th call attracted a record 91 project proposals, with 32 projects awarded computing time on LUMI. The projects span a wide range of fields, including research that combines high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing.

Here are four examples.

Anton Firc from Brno University of Technology is using LUMI alongside the VLQ quantum computer to develop new methods for detecting audio deepfakes. The project explores hybrid AI models combining classical and quantum components to make the detection of artificially generated speech more robust and reliable.

Maximilian Lamanec from IT4Innovations and the Czech Academy of Sciences is using LUMI and VLQ to develop more accurate computational methods for Auger spectroscopy. The project combines demanding molecular simulations with quantum-classical approaches to understand molecular electronic structure better and improve the interpretation of experimental data.

At Charles University, Przemysław Grenda is combining LUMI with VLQ to develop machine-learning force fields for pharmaceutical research. The project aims to reproduce highly accurate quantum-mechanical calculations at significantly lower computational cost, enabling faster simulations of interactions between drug molecules and cytochrome P450 enzymes.

Van Binh Henri Vu from IT4Innovations is exploring quantum-enhanced reservoir computing for anti-money laundering. Using LUMI and VLQ, the project will compare hybrid quantum-classical approaches with established AI methods for detecting suspicious patterns in financial transaction data, with a particular focus on improving accuracy and reducing false alarms.

These projects illustrate the increasingly diverse ways Czech researchers are combining LUMI with the VLQ quantum computer, ranging from AI-generated voices and molecular research to pharmaceutical simulations and financial fraud detection.

For IT4Innovations, access to LUMI complements the national HPC resources available at the centre, giving researchers access to one of Europe’s leading supercomputers and enabling them to explore workflows spanning HPC, AI and quantum computing. The strong demand, as evidenced by the record number of applications, also highlights the growing importance of shared European supercomputing infrastructure for research in the Czech Republic and beyond.
